What Littles Teach Us About All Things Indescribable

Kids are easily stirred by the little stuff and consistently moved by the grandeur of God’s glory. Life has yet to dull their senses. We can learn from them.

No Consequence Conversations was a practice we implemented when we were clueless on how to manage the season of raising three teens. We got the idea from the sitcom, My Wife and Kids, because we were, well, desperate 🤪 Although the practice almost killed me emotionally & aged me a few extra years, having these conversations became a game-changer for building trust and connection with our kids.We called random family meetings and let our kids unload whatever was burdening them. Maybe a poor choice they made, a predicament they were in, or a temptation they were battling. Whatever they revealed was immune from consequences. We let our kids know we were simply there to listen without judgment or reprimand.What this did for all of us was two-fold. First, my kid’s honesty and openness about what was going on in their world gave me insight into what to pray for. Mommas, if our kids aren’t communicating, we have no idea what they’re battling. God knows we don’t want them struggling on their own. For me, it's always better when I have specifics to surrender as opposed to a wandering imagination full of dread.Second, I could be the safe space they needed as they tried to find their way through many challenges and hardships. If they wanted my help, I was able to give it to the best of my ability. But at a minimum, my kids knew I was there for them as a sounding board and my love for them was steadfast regardless of the circumstances.Was this practice easy? Hell no. Did we do it perfectly? Of course not. I heard some things that rocked my world and kept me awake for days. Sometimes my kids had to bear the consequence of my poor reactions. But at the end of the day, we all grew to trust one another. We learned how to navigate hard stuff side-by-side instead of my kids living a secret life while I banged my head against a wall, worrying about what I didn’t know. Or worse, assuming things that weren't true and then creating an entire anxiety-inducing narrative around my make-believe stories.
